High class racing featured riding doubles for both Richard Woollacott and Matt Griffiths.
Woollacott secured a pillar-to-post success in the mixed open on the progressive Whizzaar, who was winning for the third time this season. A winner last time out in a hunter chase at Ascot, the nine-year-old was soon dominating this contest, winning comfortably from useful performers Tonic du Charmil and Rockwithacaveman. Owner John Symes said afterwards: "We may go for a hunter chase at the Cheltenham evening meeting, or a similar one at Aintree next."
Woollacott had initiated his double on newcomer Watch And Praey, who made full use of the weight concession for four-year-olds in the maiden for young horses. Bought privately on behalf of his owner Simon Stacey last summer, the youngster was described by his rider as, "big and backward, but a lovely sort". Both Whizzaar and Watch And Praey are stabled with the rider at Rose Ash.
Fast Development looked like making it a treble for Woollacott in the restricted, but this four-year-old, attempting to follow up her Easter Monday course victory, fell when in the lead entering the final circuit.
