ACF staff, council and members were disappointed and angry when Prime Minister Rudd announced last December that Australia's 2020 emissions target would fall within 5-15 per cent--that's below 1990 levels. Sadly, the Rudd Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) has been corrupted to the point where we see it as doing more harm than good in its current, twisted form. ACF has made it plain in the media and with all sides of politics: the scheme must not be passed into law unless it's fixed.
Fixing the CPRS and getting science-based targets in place are not going to be easy. Intense lobbying by the big polluting companies is increasing, not fading. The government and opposition are refusing to face up to the scale of emission reductions required.
