INTRODUCTION
The treatment of complex diseases such as cancer requires highly specialized professionals, equipment and services. For example, in Newfoundland and Labrador, the bulk of cancer services is centralized in St. John's, the provincial capital where, in 2007, 183 469 (36.2%) of the province's 506 275 population lived. (1) St. John's has the sole radiotherapy facility in the province and is home to all the province's oncologists. However, 42.2% (213 370) of the province's population lives in rural communities.
