"How can I help?"

When your girlfriend vents about a problem, resist the urge to step in with a solution (unless her issue is a flat tire or a hard-to-open jar). "Men instinctively want to fix things, but women may interpret that as condescending," says Susan Campbell, PhD, author of Saying What's Real. Instead, ask what you can do. The question will calm her, and she'll appreciate your lending an ear. Plus, you won't need ESP because she'll have the green light to tell you exactly what she needs to feel better.
