The race is on to produce a single engine platform capable of sustaining Formula One, the World Rally Championship and perhaps the IndyCar Series as well, FIA president Max Mosley announced at the WRC Rally de Portugal during the weekend of April 4.
"We're looking at the moment at a "world engine' for 2013, Mosley said. "That's to say an engine that would work in turbocharged form for F1 and then all the way down to naturally aspirated form for [development series] and in a turbocharged or naturally aspirated form for the World Rally Championship.
The FIA has considered such a concept for more than two years, but Mosley has now steered the entire sport toward adopting it and laid out a time frame that coincides with the term of the next FIA presidency, with elections to take place later this year. Many observers take this as an affirmation that Mosley will campaign for his fifth term of office, despite previously saying that he would stand down after last year's tabloid sex scandal.
