SEBASTIEN LOEB scored his 50th world championship win recently in Cyprus (Competition, March 23), a landmark followed by win No. 51 in Portugal on April 5. It took him only seven years, whereas the previous record holder, Carlos Sainz, needed 14 years to reach 26 wins. Loeb holds every meaningful record and has an incredible win ratio: 51 wins in 103 starts for Citroen.
In fact, the Frenchman is so dominant that he may quit rallying for circuit racing. "There is not much more for me in rallying. Maybe it is time for a new challenge, he said recently.
His feats have brought him many admirers, including Ford team boss and rival Malcolm Wilson. "Sebastien is so special, isn't he? I think we are all privileged to be around at a time when he is driving, he said.
