1977-89 Wins Alsace gymnastics championship four times; places fifth in all-France championship.
1992 Writes off parents' car at age 18. Plans career as electrician.
1998 Enters French Citroen Saxo Trophy rally series. Guy Frequelin takes him under his wing.
1999 Wins Saxo Trophy. Contests three WRC events in Junior 1600; wins class twice.
2001 Wins Junior World Championship and French series; finishes second overall on first drive in top-level WRC car (Citroen Xsara) at San Remo.
2002 Drives in nine WRC events. Wins Monte Carlo but is demoted to second because of team penalty. First win comes in Germany.
