More than 14% of the earth was once covered by lush rainforest. Now, that number has significantly dropped to 6%. If this drastic drop continues, scientists predict that the rainforest will be gone in the next 40 years. With the future of the rainforest at stake, we all must take action to help protect it.
If the rainforest is destroyed, many important resources will be gone. For example, many medicine-making plants will die out. These plants can be used to cure a lot of deadly diseases. Without them, doctors and scientists may not be able to conduct experiments to see if they can be used for other cures. It's possible that one undiscovered plant in the rainforest could solve cancer or Alzheimer's disease. Other resources that will be lost if the rainforest is destroyed include undiscovered animal species, a large supply of oxygen, and exotic goods.
