Cocoa for Better Skin
Cocoa with a high antioxidant concentration has been shown to smooth the skin when ingested regularly, but a new study is one of the first to prove that it has anti-aging effects when applied topically. In tests on human skin samples, a cream containing Acticoaa cocoa extract rich in antioxidants called flavonolsboosted the production of collagen and glycosaminoglycans (proteins involved in skin elasticity and moisture) significantly more than did no treatment, and about the same amount as did an anti-aging cream (EstA[c]e Lauder's Future Perfect). Products with Acticoa are available in Europe; in general, the best skin products of this kind are those in which cocoa (not cocoa butter, which is low in flavonols) is listed among the first four ingredients, says study coauthor Laurent Peno-Mazzarino, a researcher at Laboratoire BIO-EC in France. The concentration of flavonols must be higher than what is normally in dark chocolate in order to be effective, he says.
23%
to 99 percent more collagen production occurred with use of a cocoa skin cream.
