With college costs on the rise, some schools are offering a three-year degree in an attempt to lure more students.
Although it's the norm for Europe, the three-year undergrad degree is rare in the United States. Hartwick College, a liberal arts school in New York, announced it will become the latest of several U.S. schools to offer it.
At the recent American Council on Education meeting, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) asked colleges to offer three-year degrees. But schools that have tried such programs have found few takers. Most students seem to want the full four years to experience the academic and social aspects of college life.
