Team owner Rick Hendrick scored his first Cup Series win in April 1984 at Martinsville Speedway in his beloved southern Virginia. It came from legendary crew chief Harry Hyde and upstart driver Geoffrey Bodine, whom the late Hyde once called "an arrogant prick and a prima donna. Moments later (as Bodine tells the story), Hyde added, "But I love Rick Hendrick more than I hate you, so let's make this thing work.
Hendrick Motorsports subsequently grew into one of NASCAR's best teams, with eight Cup titles, three in the Camping World Truck Series and one in the Nation-wide Series. It has 176 Cup victories, 26 in Nationwide
and 25 in trucks, including every truly meaningful event. "But I wouldn't be here if Geoff and Harry hadn't won 25 years ago, Hendrick said. "I was on the verge of closing down because I didn't have a sponsor. I don't know if I would have gone much longer.
