With more than 20,000 miles on the clock in six months of service, the transmission still shifts a bit abruptly, but it fared well on a long cross-country trek, kicking down or holding the proper gear as needed. In a few situations, a pass on a two-lane with four people aboard caused some apprehension, but the engine and trans were more than up to the task with a safety margin to spare. The van still feels solid and stout, though we'd like a little more brake performance or a little less mass.

If you have to go out in a blizzardas we did so often this winteran all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Evolution rally car with snow tires at all four corners is the answer. You always feel well in control, especially with the center diff switched to snow mode; the Evo is less tail-happy, unless you really get into the throttle. This is one of the most enjoyable winter commuter cars we've ever had in our long-term fleet. It's an absolute snow machine, seemingly unstoppable, perfectly balanced and electronically controlled to keep its bearings in the slippery stuff. What a blast!
