But the star of the weekend, Jacques Villeneuve, came within a technical glitch of winning his first Formula One race in his own debut.
Villeneuve went to F1 after two successful years in CART, where he won the series title and the Indy 500 in 1995. Williams-Renault was at the top of the field, and the Canadian driver was well prepared to race following intensive winter testing. In Mel-bourne, he outqualified and outraced veteran teammate Damon Hill.
