YOU'RE DAYDREAMING IN A COLlege classroom, and the cell phone rings you to your senses. AutoWeek editors offer a 2010 Ford Mustang convertible for a drive to Panama City Beach, Fla., over the weekend. Pinch yourself.
No, really, that's how it happened for photographer Andrew Trahan and me, leaving our cares and our classmates behind on a 2,247.8-mile round-trip trek to a place that's been voted America's No. 1 Spring Break destination.
Neither of us had done a Spring Break before. This one meant 35 hours of sober open-road drives in a Kona blue, as-yet-unreleased Mustang GT convertible and 23 hours on the ground with babes and beaches.
In tough economic times, Spring Break is especially valuable, the sunshine and relaxation acting as an antidote to worry, a salve for stress. Students, middle-aged car guys and even retired couples make the journey and share the open road. Spring Break is more than sand and beer. It is catharsis. It is the woman at the Tim Hortons who made us a half-dozen Boston Creams at midnight and the 62-foot-tall sculpted "Big Butter Jesus we passed in Monroe, Ohio. It is, on the heels of winter's confines, a mental and emotional purge.
This Spring Break was also a top-notch venue for the Mustang, as the ladies all took notice of our Panama City ride. We got waves and applause, thumbs-up and screams along 11-mile Front Beach Road. As much as ego would like to claim that this attention was directed at us, we knew it was for the American iron.
"I wish my Mustang looked this nice, said Kelly Brauer as she jumped into the back seat.
