Faced with losing the majority of its business, Sallie Mae is looking for ways to remain viable.

The company hopes to win a contract to continue managing student loans if Congress lets the federal government take over the industry.

The government pays subsidies to Sallie Mae and other companies to create and manage student loans. President Barack Obama wants the government to handle all of those loans to save money -- potentially $47.5 billion to $94 billion during the next 10 years, according to various estimates.
