Most people confront Labor Day with a deep sense of loss, a sadness and loathing ingrained since youth. Labor Day marks the end of summer, the return to the tyranny of work, or, worse, school. Not me. I embrace Labor Day. Those old "What I did on my summer vacation" essays we wrote as children evolved into "Guess what so-and-so has been working on all summer?" e-mail messages sent to yours truly. Once you all get back to work, my work gets so much more interesting.
For example, rumors that IBM has designs on Novell have the Utah company's stock on an upward climb. The crew at Novell seems happy to have options of some value again, but no one's saying the rumor has legs. …
