A MAN died after thick black smoke engulfed his home following a house fire.
Police and fire crews were alerted to the situation when worried neighbours became concerned.
It is thought the blaze started in the three-bedroom house in Cainsmore Close, Walker, Newcastle, at the weekend but burnt itself out.
The 58-year-old victim, named locally as Bob Pollard, was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday morning.
