PATIENT care will suffer if NHS Grampian is to meet a target limiting the amount of time junior doctors work, it was claimed last night.

Figures released under freedom of information legislation show that just a third of junior doctors work 48 hours a week as will be required under the European working time directive come August.

Doctors and politicians said the health board has an uphill struggle to meet the deadline, although it was confident it will meet the challenge.

Figures obtained by the Labour party show Grampian is just 34% compliant with the new hours -- the worst in Scotland. The current working time limit is 56 hours.

Dr Andrew Conway Morris said reducing weekly shifts by eight hours will be difficult to achieve.
