ALTHOUGH the majority of caravanning is commonsense, there are important checks to make before you set off. Even if you are an experienced tower, it is worth running through some pre-trip checks before embarking on your first trip of the spring.

Here are the 10 essential checks every caravanner should make:

1Check the tyre pressures and tread depth, and inspect the tyres for signs of cracking or premature failure. Re-torque the wheel nuts.

2Make sure the handbrake operates freely by pulling and releasing the lever several times. Lubricate and adjust it as necessary.

3Couple up a gas cylinder and make sure all the appliances are working.
