IF YOU are considering hitching up and hitting the open road this spring, bear in mind that there are strict rules and regulations when it comes to towing a caravan or trailer.
If you passed your test on or after January 1, 1997, you are restricted to the entitlement of licence category B, which restricts you to driving a vehicle with an MAM (maximum authorised mass) of up to 3,500kg and towing a trailer of 750kg -- or a heavier trailer or caravan as long as the combined MAM of vehicle and caravan/trailer does not exceed 3,500kg and the MAM of the caravan/trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the tow vehicle.
You can upgrade your category B entitlement by taking a further test to obtain category B+E, which will enable you to tow larger caravans with any vehicle having an MAM not exceeding 3,500kg.
The weight ratio of car and caravan is also a consideration. Informed opinion is that, for safety and stability, the laden weight of the caravan should not exceed 85% of the kerb ...
