A recent story in Electronic News detailed progress toward the commercializa- tion of flat-panel Field Emission Display (FED) technology. Such displays are as bright as today's CRTs and offer the same wide viewing angle, but they con- sume very little power and are quite thin and light. If they could be manufac- tured cheaply in high volume, they would be ideal for laptop computers.

Toward this end, Motorola is building a production plant in Tempe, AZ, that is expected to turn out small (5"-6") panels by the end of 1997. …
