Land Rover will put its LRX concept car, first displayed at the 2008 Detroit auto show, into production as a Range Rover with the help of a $37 million grant from the British government.
The move to the upscale Range Rover badge, versus the Land Rover tag on the concept, suggests that the small LR2-based SUV will be pitched farther upmarket than originally intendedagainst four-wheel-drive rivals such as the Audi Q5, the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK.
"Internal studies have shown that if we deliver the LRX to market, it would be best suited to the Range Rover brand, said Land Rover boss Phil Popham.
