BMW is finally getting serious about city cars. But contrary to rumors at Munich headquarters, it is not planning a one-size-fits-all model to meet future mobility needs of urban dwellers, as rival Mercedes-Benz has done with its popular two-seat Smart.
Instead, senior BMW officials said they are considering launching a complete range of city cars with vastly differing layouts and differing powertrains as part of a push into a market segment below that of Mini.
Ulrich Kranz, head of the "Project i initiative for new-age city cars, outlined BMW's plans at the Geneva show. He confirmed that engineers are focusing on three primary concepts that will be on sale by 2015.
"We have identified eight megacities around the world with populations over 5 million that we consider key to our city-car plans, including Los Angeles, New York, London, Tokyo, Mexico City, Barcelona, Paris and Shanghai, said Kranz. "Each of them boasts unique requirements that we think will require different solutions in terms of city-car thinking.
