* The Series That Refuses to Die, formally known this season as Cooper Tires Presents the Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, returns for its 36th year, despite struggles that could well have killed a less dedicated bunch.
Last year, with the demise of parent series Champ Car, Atlantic had to cobble together a last-minute schedule. With help from Mazda, the series ran 11 races, with four in Canada and the rest in the United States.
One major selling point under Champ Car was a decent purse, capped with a $1 million prize for the series champ to put toward a Champ Car ride. Even without that, champion Marcus Niemela of Finland, a rookie with Brooks Associates Racing, won $364,000 in prize money, including $252,500 for the title. Jonathan Bomarito was second in points, followed by rookie Jonathan Summerton.
The 2009 series champ will get $1 million cash, as part of a total $3 million purse. Second place gets $500,000. As you can expect, there suddenly is renewed interest in the series, with graduates such as Tony Ave talking about a comeback.
