Sebringthen what?
Never before has the ALMS featured three big-spending manufacturers competing for outright wins in the top prototype division. The series' problem is that, for now, anyway, Sebring is a one-off. The in-house Peugeot Sport team and Audi's factory Joest Racing operation head back to Europe after the 12 Hours, leaving the two Acuras to squabble over LMP1 wins during most of the season, though Audi will return for Petit Le Mans in September and the Monterey, Calif., finale in October. That's why Sebring is a must-see for true sports-car fans.
Return of the hybrid
A gasoline-electric LMP1 hybrid should race in the ALMS sooner rather than later. Don't expect to see the Corsa Motor-sports Zytek hybrid at Sebring, but the project is active, and the car, with a 50-hp kick from an electric motor, could join the action in round two at St. Petersburg, Fla., in April. It's a low-key program but could offer a pointer to racing's future.
