There are few U.S. ambassadorships as important as the one in Iraq. And we have enjoyed in that post three highly qualified men: John Negroponte, Zalmay Khalilzad, and Ryan Crocker. President Obama has nominated an ambassador of his own: Christopher Hill. Under George W. Bush (and, perhaps more to the point, Condoleezza Rice), Hill was chief U.S. negotiator in the North Korean disarmament talks. He was far too eager to accommodate the North Koreans, and naive about the threats we face. He also appeared indifferent to human rights. Moreover, he has no experience in the Middle East.
