France is rejoining NATO, Pres. Nicolas Sarkozy has announced. He claims to be the heir of Gaullism, but General de Gaulle must be turning in his grave. He it was who in 1966 kicked Americans out of their bases in France and withdrew from the alliance. The alleged refusal of American administrations to recognize the grandeur of France had bred in the general a resentment that went deep into French society.
