Advocates of a new school tax in Cobb County - unlike those in other metro school districts - have encountered well-organized opposition that could sink the proposed local-option sales tax for school construction that's on the ballot June 17.

Opponents of the measure insist that the Cobb County Board of Education has not managed its current revenues efficiently, has mounted the referendum precipitately and still has unused funds available from its 1995 bond referendum. Yard signs opposing the referendum have cropped up all over the county, while proponents of the measure launched their direct-mail, pro-tax offensive just one week before the polls were to open. …
