An Invitation to a Ball, Hyde Park, Sydney February 5, 1868
The then Duke of Edinburgh, Alfred--in fact the last Duke of that title before the present Duke--was in the Australian Colonies in late 1867 and early 1868. He travelled on board H.M.S. Galatea. The best account of his troubled voyage is:
Milner, The Rev. John and Oswald W. Briefly. 1869.
The Cruise of H.M.S. Galatea, Captain/ H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, K.G.,/in/ 1867-1868.
--W.H. Allen and Co., London
Brierly was a renowned artist and handsomely illustrated the book.
Because the invitation, here illustrated, is to 'Captain Mann' I believe him to be Captain J.F. Mann (1819-1907) According to the article by Peter Orlovich in Volume 5 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, after four years in the British Army, Mann joined the Trigonometrical Survey of Britain. In 1841 he came to Sydney. On 16 April 1857 he married Camilla Victoria, one of the daughters of Sir Thomas Mitchell. Unfortunately she died in 1863. That explains why Captain Mann's ticket to the Ball is a 'Gentleman's Ticket', the Green Ticket.
