The Economic Community of West African States has begun moves to internalise the travel insurance scheme within member-states. Towards this end, it has asked member-countries to set up their permanent secretariats by 2010.
Established in 1982 by ECOWAS Heads of States protocol to facilitate movement of people across the sub-region, the Brown Card Scheme guarantees prompt and fair payment of claims arising from injuries, damages incurred by visiting non-resident motorists in states within the sub-region.
