Ryan Briscoe (212.156 mph) and Scott Dixon (211.825) paced the field at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Feb. 24-25, in the IndyCar Series' first open test of 2009, but they were not the only drivers in the spotlight.
Among the drivers debuting for their new teams was Mario Moraes (KV Racing Technology), who finished sixth on the speed chart among 21 drivers.
The other newcomers to teams were Will Power (seventh for Team Penske), rookie Mike Conway (ninth for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing), former Champ Car standout Robert Doornbos and Milka Duno (12th and 16th, respectively, for Newman/Haas/Lanigan), Indy Lights champion Raphael Matos (18th for Luczo Dragon Racing), Justin Wilson (19th for Dale Coyne's team) and former NASCAR driver Stanton Barrett (21st for Team 3G).
There were no accidents, and chief steward Brian Barnhart was not concerned about what seemed to be a high number of cut tires.
"We seem to [experience that] each year at the open test, but it doesn't seem to be as bad during race weekends," he said.
