At the line, I disengage the reverser and start inching forward. I find a spot down the track and shift my eyes between the Christmas tree and that spot a few times to make that move automatic.
The crew chief gives me the final OK, and I slam my helmet shield down and creep into the prestage timing beams. I stare down the middle of the groove, because with these cars, if you look anywhere else, that's where it's going.
