When I first heard about plans for a new Formula One team (Competition, Feb. 23), I confess that I was skeptical. This does not seem the most propitious time to enter the most expensive series on earthand this is to be an American team. Enthu-siasm for F1 in the United States is patchy, and in 2009, lest we forget, not a single North American race is on the F1 schedule.
As I heard more, though, my skepticism faded. The men behind USF1, Ken Ander-son and Peter Windsor, are enormously experienced in the sport, Anderson (who will be team principal) as a designer and engineer in both F1 and Indy-car teams and Windsor as a highly perceptive journalist and broadcaster, who also worked for Williams and Ferrari.
The team is to be based in Charlotte, N.C., the undisputed hub of U.S. racing. And commercial expediency has moved F1 into a new era, with both the FIA and the teams committed to cost cutting on a draconian scale. Long ...
