Dario Franchitti admits that last year's brief, painful ride through NASCAR humbled him.
Driving a Chip Ganassi-owned car that was ill fit to compete at the highest level of the Sprint Cup Series, the former CART standout, 2007 Indianapolis 500 winner and 2007 IndyCar Series champion labored through difficult times that included an injury and a lack of sponsorship.
Without sufficient funds, Ganassi parked Franchitti's car and released the staff that went along with it. For the first time in his career, the Scotsman was at something of a loss.
"There was a certain aspect of going from winning the Indy 500 and the championship to not being able to find a sponsor, he said. "Not being competitive enough in NASCAR . . . you can say it was inexperience or the team learning, but whatever the reason, it was a bitter pill to swallow.
Franchitti, 35, says he hopes that what Ganassi offered was something akin to medicine. This season, Franchitti has one of IndyCar's best rides, teaming with reigning series and Indy champion Scott Dixon. He'll drive the No. 10 Target-sponsored car.
