The word "but occurs with high frequency in staff notes about our long-term Mitsubishi Lancer Evo MR.

As in: "The better-quality interior is welcome, but there is a rattle in the glovecompartment area. Or: "It has the handling pedigree but lacks the aura of its predecessor that made you drive the daylights out of it. Or: "It's not great for every day, but it's also not fast enough for track day.

Other negative themes recur: The dual-clutch transmission is problematic (clunking and grinding), above and beyond the fact that it's not a manual, which would be the overwhelming preference. Trunk space is forbiddingly tight, what with the trunk being the site for the battery, the subwoofer and the wiper-fluid tank. The ride is harsh ("not as bad as the Evo IX but still something that will have your average Joe complaining), and the fuel tank seems undersized.
