Challenged to reduce operating costs and faced with stricter government regulations regarding the handling and disposal of scrap and waste materials, managers are reexamining their organizations' disposal methods. Effective byproduct and scrap disposal can lead to lower overall costs and may include strategic links with suppliers.

The procurement function plays a significant role in byproduct disposal.
