Mar. 12--Prosecutors and defense lawyers tussled Wednesday over the key question in the federal drug-trafficking trial of a South Florida physician: Was the defendant a drug dealer or a doctor?
According to prosecutors, Dr. Ali Shaygan, 36, acted as a drug dealer, doling out prescriptions for powerful pain medications to boost his income.
Drug seekers routinely traveled from Palm Beach County to Miami Beach for appointments with Shaygan because he fed their painkiller addictions "without a hassle," prosecutor Sean Cronin said in closing arguments to the jury in Miami federal court.
