IBM is hoping to turn the recent e-mail nightmares of Internet service provider (ISP) subscribers into gold with its Scalable E-Mail Server.

The product, which IBM announced earlier this month, is targeted at large ISPs and can reportedly handle millions of users.

Based on IBM's Deep Blue technology, the server adds a special suite of e-mail software developed by Lotus' Soft-Switch messaging unit to IBM's RS/6000 server.

The product supports Internet standards, including SMTP, IMAP4, and POP3, and will also integrate with legacy e-mail platforms and X.400-based messaging systems.
