Sprint PCS wireless phone service debuts.

Sprint PCS, jointly owned by Sprint and several cable companies, has its reasons why its won't offer many of the features that have become synonmous with personal communication service.

Sprint PCS debuted its digital wireless telephone network this week, becoming the first of the area's personal communication service (PCS) licensees to offer service.

But in a bit of a surprise, while some of Sprint PCS' services are less expensive than those offered by the area's existing cellular telephone companies, Sprint will not offer many of the features that have become synonymous with PCS - such as paging, text messaging and voice mail - for several months.
