ISDN is a phone company service that allows businesses to transfer data at higher speeds than is possible using ordinary modems. It is a great option for situations where even a 28.8- or 33.6-kbps modem is not fast enough.

While you may be familiar with the potential of ISDN, actually going out and purchasing the right equipment for it can be difficult. This column is designed to shed some light on the different types of equipment on the market.

NT-1

The most important piece of equipment for ISDN is a network termination device, or an NT-1. This device connects to the ISDN network and establishes your office as an end point for making or receiving ISDN calls.
