The state of Oregon has been at the forefront of the managed care revolution which has swept the nation. The shift away from traditional indemnity health plans to preferred provider organizations (PPOs) and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that directly manage medical benefits costs has resulted in a dramatic drop in the rate of medical inflation.

No attempt to control health care costs can be successful over the long haul without addressing the issue of quality. There fore, to ensure that high-quality care is not sacrificed for reduced costs, employers have a responsibility to thoroughly investigate managed care organizations before making commitments to them. For employers considering offering an HMO plan, here are some points to consider during the selection process.
