Being called out to see a patient with a severe mental illness is time-consuming and causes anxiety for the doctor.

In recognition of this, payments are available under the Mental Health Act. These are not automatic and need to be claimed.

The Mental Health Act 1983 for England and Wales has been updated by a 2007 Act. There are few changes for primary care and the pink forms used for emergency assessments remain inherently the same.

There are similar acts for Scotland and Northern Ireland, with corresponding powers.
