To hear some people talk, the next big thing after the Daytona 500 on Feb. 15 is the October unveiling of the new NASCAR Hall of Fame's inaugural class. Debates are raging on Web sites, blogs and message boards about the makeup of that first class.
At a time when motorsports halls of fame are seemingly everywhere, the one in downtown Charlotte, N.C., will be NASCAR's "official hall. The facility will have all manner of displays, memorabilia, screening rooms, assembly rooms, interactive gadgets, attractions for kids and the hall itself.
Each class will include only five inductees, guaranteeing that some world-class egos will have to wait. The 20-member nominating committeemade up of NASCAR execs, manufacturer reps, former competitors, the media and fanswill work from an annual list of 25 candidates. That committee gets 20 ballots, former competitors and the media share 27 more, and fans get in through a national poll.
