At the launch of the new McLaren-Mercedes MP4-24 Formula One car, company chairman Ron Dennis spoke about the season to come and about procedural changes necessitated by new rules and the credit crunchone consequence of which is a ban on in-season testing.
That being so, simulation techniques will be even more crucial than before, and McLaren can only benefit from this, for the company's F1 driving simulator is widely thought to be superior to anyone else's. Dennis admitted that he initially was skeptical about a simulator but changed his mind swiftly.
"To give you an initial perspective, he said, "probably 95-plus percent of every development of the car is the result of development and research and simulation conducted in this building. Track time is very often to correlate that information.
The day after the launch of the MP4-24, Pedro de la Rosa drove it for the first time. "I'm happy to report, he said, "that the car behaved just as we believed it would from our data.
"It would be wrong to say we pioneered this technology, said Dennis, "because it's found everywhere in environments like aerospace. But we did really bring it to F1 more aggressively than anyone has in the past, and hopefully, that will give us an advantage this season.
