The lid came off of Acura's new LMP1 prototype in more ways than one at Sebring, Jan. 26-28. The world got to see the ARX-02a up close for the first time at its official unveiling, and rivals got a clear sense of just how quick it will be.
A car billed as "a no-compromise design set a best time of 1 minute, 44.814 seconds in the hands of De Ferran Motorsports driver Simon Pagenaud during the official American Le Mans Series test. That's not as fast as the Peugeot and Audi turbodiesels managed last year, but the ARX-02a complies with new aerodynamic rules that rob cars of downforce. Pagenaud reckoned there was more to come.
