RETURN OF THE INDEPENDENTS
With only eight fully funded teams in Top Fuel, conventional 16-car fields often will be filled on many stops by low-bucks, self-funded groups looking to have fun and collect the $10,000 first-round loser money. An increase in show-stalling engine blowups and subsequent track oil-downs could be the downside. Things will be only marginally better in Funny Car and Pro Stock, which also lack the required number of full-time teams to fill race-day ladders all year.
