While the worldwide economy falters, the tech economy is in a mad rush to cut jobs. Locally, Intel's 1,800 jobs, Amkor's 1,500 jobs and a host of other screaming layoff headlines all banner the fact that our export sector is being battered.

While slumps are basically (hopefully) cycles, we can expect a recovery sometime in the future. When that recovery will happen, well... my crystal ball is in the repair shop at the moment.

But as I keep arguing in this column, we ought to take this opportunity to revisit our orientation towards the export economy as a major driver of growth. While I have never advocated that we stop laying …
