Abstract
Westerners' wonder and tendency for 'the other' in art goes back several centuries, although Orientalism appeared as a branch of science in the 19th century. The interest in the East was reinforced through trade, diplomacy, war and contact with the travellers and artists in the 18th century. Orientalism became an important inspiration for the artists in the 19th century. The fantasy of the 'Eastern Culture " in the 18th century was replaced by direct contact with the East.
