Defying the cold, snow and clouds outside the Detroit exhibit hall, carmakers revealed several models designed for sun worshippers.
The Volkswagen BlueSport mid-engine roadster concept is ready to build as-is, but it's at least three years from production. It's made up of a mix of components from other VW products, including the next transverse, front-engine platform, code-named MQB. But MQB won't be tooled until 2012, so the BlueSport must wait to borrow from that parts bin. The engine, transmission and rear suspension come from today's Golf, while the front suspension, steering and some other parts come from the nextgeneration Polo. "We set out to make it a legal and ready-to-go design, said advanced design chief Thomas Inglenath.
The Kia Soulster concept drops the rear doors of the youth-oriented Soul SUV and adds a two-piece removable top. Powertrain options, if it makes production, could include 1.6- and 2.0-liter four-cylinders.
Like the hard-roof model, the second-generation 2009 Mini Cooper convertible is faster and more powerful than the original. Features include an "Openometer, which monitors driving time with the roof down. Expect the fun to begin in late March.
