After the global economic crisis dominated headlines during the first months of the off-season, Formula One racing shook off its winter blues as leading teams unveiled new cars and prepared to go head-to-head in testing the week of Jan. 19.
Regulation changes mean that the cars look quite different from before, and who will seize the advantage in the buildup to the first race in Australia on March 29 is wide open.
Ferrari was the first team to break cover, showing its new F60 at its Mugello test track in Italy on Jan. 12. Toyota and McLaren-Mercedes launched their new models on Jan. 15 and 16, respectively. Renault and Williams F1 launched their machines on Jan. 19, and BMW-Sauber's car was scheduled to emerge on the 20th.
All but BMW (testing in Valencia, Spain) and Ferrari (Mugello) planned to get to work at Portugal's new Algarve testing venue. Red Bull Racing, Scuderia Toro Rosso and Force India have yet to show their hands.
